In recent years, actors and other celebrities have felt safe enough to open up about their sexuality and identity. They have shared their experiences as a queer individual and the journey they went through to be comfortable in their lives.






But not only their sexual identities, today we will talk about the success they have found over the years. Here is a list of 10 LGBTQ+ stars and their brief career overview.

Jonathan Bailey

Jonathan Bailey is not a new name in the entertainment industry, seeing as he is a regular face in stage productions. But his prominence grew in 2022 after he portrayed the part of Anthony, Viscount Bridgerton in the second series of the Netflix series, Bridgerton. The second season centered around his character and his portrayal was loved by audiences and critics alike. Furthermore, Jonathan’s chemistry with his co-star, Simone Ashley received much attention.

Long before finding worldwide fame through Bridgerton, Bailey, who identifies as gay, had received a Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in the West End revival of the musical, Company. He is known for his stage career in both England and US having appeared in productions of plays such as Othello, King Lear, The Last Five Years, Les Misérables, and more.

Continuing with his stage career, Jonathan headlined the 2022 West End revival of Cock by Mike Barlett. He also has a few significant movie roles in the coming days, which shows us that the actor’s career is flourishing well.

Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson came out in June 2022 publicly and also announced her partner Ramona Agruma through her Instagram. She chose to announce her relationship so that a pre-empt article on The Sydney Morning Herald by Andrew Hornery would not out her. The incident highlighted how difficult it is for celebrities to keep their personal life away from the spotlight and also how queer individuals have to live in fear of being outed.

Well since coming out, Wilson has received much support from people in the industry and her fans. But even before the incident, Rebel was a popular individual thanks to her successful career. Her entertainment journey started out in her home country Australia before she moved to the States.

Following the move, Rebel worked on comedy films such as Bridesmaids, A Few Best Men, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Bachelorette, and Struck by Lightning. Her popularity grew after playing the part of Fat Amy in the musical comedy movie series Pitch Perfect from 2012 to 2017. Furthermore, she is also known for her work in Jojo Rabbit, Cats, Senior Year, and her first non-comedic role in The Almond and the Seahorse.

Charlie Barnett

Charlie Barnett is best known for his performance as the firefighter/paramedic Peter Mills on the popular NBC drama Chicago Fire. He was a part of the show from 2012 to 2015 and was one of the fans’ favorite characters on it. Besides his time on Chicago Fire, he is also known for his appearances in Private Romeo, Men in Black 3, The Happy Sad, and The Stand In.

Furthermore, Barnett’s fame rose after he starred in the military drama, Valor in 2017. This was followed by appearances in Russian Doll, Tales of the City, Arrow, and You. His prominence grew in 2022 after it was announced that Charlie was in final negotiations to join the Star Wars series The Acolyte. Well, it is evident that the talented actor’s fame is on the rise.

Charlie, who is a Juilliard School graduate, is gay and announced his engagement to Drew Bender, a set designer in April 2022.

Emma Corrin

Emma Corrin came into the limelight after it was announced that they would play Diana, Princess of Wales in the fourth season of The Crown. Their performance in the historical drama was well received by audiences and critics alike and earned them nominations at the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Primetime Emmy Award.

Following her successful work in The Crown, Emma has worked on projects such as My Policeman, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and Ten Percent among others. However, it was their West End debut in the 2021 production of Anna X that earned Corrin even more prominence. They were even nominated in the Best Actress category at the Laurence Olivier Award for the part.

Emma has been open about their identity, having come out as queer in July 2021. The following year, Corrin started using they/them pronouns on their social media and even talked about being nonbinary in interviews. Furthermore, they have called for gender-neutral categories at major award ceremonies so that they would be inclusive.

Ariana DeBose

Ariana DeBose was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2022. This came after she won major awards for her part in the movie adaptation of the musical West Side Story in 2021. Moreover, DeBose made history by becoming the first queer woman of color to win Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 94th Academy Awards.

But even before her rise to fame as Anita in West Side Story, Ariana has had a wonderful career. She started out as a competitor on the show, So You Think You Can Dance in 2009 and then transitioned to acting. DeBose secured parts in numerous theater productions around the US and even played Mary Wilson in the Broadway production of Motown, understudying the role of Diana Ross.

DeBose worked on the production of Pippin, Hamilton, and A Bronx Tale while also making guest appearances in a few TV shows. She went on to star as Disco Donna in La Jolla Playhouse’s Summer: The Donna Summer Musical which became her breakthrough role. This was followed by numerous appearances in plays, movies, and shows before securing her Oscar-winning part in West Side Story.

In addition to enjoying her career success, Ariana DeBose is also in a happy relationship with Sue Makkoo, the costume designer and professor. She identifies as queer and came out to her grandparents in 2015.

Aunjanue Ellis

An industry veteran, Aunjanue Ellis came out as bisexual in her interview with Variety magazine. However, she had already hinted at her sexuality by wearing a suit jacket with the word Queer spelled on one of her sleeves during the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards ceremony. Well, while she only came out in recent years, Ellis has been active in the entertainment industry for over twenty years now.

Aunjanue made her acting debut playing Ariel in the Broadway revival of The Tempest in 1995. That same year she made her screen debut through the show New York Undercover which was followed by a key role in the 1996 movie Girls Town. Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Ellis starred in many television series and movies, mostly securing a significant part.

Ellis’ prominence grew in the 2010s thanks to her work in projects such as Game of Death, The Tested, The Help, Get on Up, Abducted: The Carlina White Story, The Divide, The Book of Negroes and THe Birth of a Nation to name a few. Furthermore, she received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her work in the 2019 crime drama When They See Us.

2022 saw Aunjanue playing Oracene Price in the critically acclaimed biopic King Richard. The movie covered the life of Richard Williama, tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams’ father, played by Will Smith and Ellis earned nominations at major award ceremonies. While she did not win the award, her performance was applauded by people around the world.

Kit Connor

Talking about celebrities coming out in 2022, the up-and-coming actor Kit Connor is also one on the list. However, his coming out story has a sad backstory seeing as he had faced harassment and claims of queerbaiting after being photographed with actress Maia Reficco. Kit who plays the bisexual character, Nick Nelson in the hit Netflix series Heartstopper came out as bisexual in a Twitter post. He also stated that fans had missed the point of the show and actually forced him to out himself.

Well, despite the negative experience he faced, Kit is very proud of his work in Heartstopper. The show was even renewed for a second and third season with Nelson reprising his part as Nick Nelson. But even before he found fame as the lovable Nick, Connor had already been the talk of the town. He started his career as a child actor appearing in projects such as Chickens, An Adventure in Space and Time, and Rocket’s Island.

Kit worked on numerous other projects whether it is stage productions or television shows and movies. His prominence grew after playing a teenage Elton John in the 2019 musical Rocketman. Well, Connor’s career is on the rise with him booking many significant parts in upcoming projects.

Joe Locke

Well, Kit Connor was not the only name that found worldwide fame through Heartstopper. Joining him is Joe Locke who plays Charlie Spring in the popular queer show. Much like the character he plays on the show, Locke also identifies as gay and has talked about his experience while growing up on the Isle of Man.

Well, Heartstopper is Joe’s first professional work but he participated in National Theatre Connections in 2020 and productions of plays at various theaters. But it seems like Locke’s career is on the rise seeing as he was cast in the upcoming Marvel series, Agatha: Coven of Chaos on Disney+. Furthermore, he also played the part of Noah in the play The Trials Donmar Warehouse.

Barbie Ferreira

Another young star on this list is the Euphoria star, Barbara Ferreira. Along with acting she has also found success as a model and has even tried her hand at directing. She started her career by sending modeling photos to an open casting call. After this, she modeled for brands such as Adidas, Aerie, Forever 21, Asos, Target, Missguided, and H&M to name a few.

As for her on-screen career, Barbie’s journey started in 2017 with an appearance in the video How to Behave. She also starred in New York Minute and A-Z of Hair that year before making a guest appearance in the series Divorce.

Ferreira booked the part of Kat Hernandez in the HBO series, Euphoria and worked on two seasons of the show. She played the character from 2019 to 2022 but chose to leave the show after alleged disagreements with Sam Levinson, the series creator. Besides Euphoria, Barbie has also appeared in the show, The Afterparty, and the movies Unpregnant and Nope.

Barbara Ferreira identifies as queer and has played queer characters in a few of her projects. Well, we wish her more success in the coming days.

Hunter Doohan

Hunter Doohan first found fame for his performance as young Warren Cave in the Apple TV+ series, Truth Be Told in 2019. He had previously worked on projects such as Schooled, Westworld, The Other Client List, and Coffee House Chronicles. He also starred in the movies Where We Disappear and Soundwave.

However, it was his appearance as Tyler Galpin in the Netflix supernatural comedy horror, Wednesday that thrusted Hunter to worldwide fame. Doohan’s prominence grew following the release of Wednesday on Netflix in November 2022. He has since become one of the most talked about young actors in the industry.

The success of Wednesday also resulted in people wanting to know more about Hunter’s personal life. Well, the actor has been open about his life as a gay man. Moreover, he is married to his partner, Fielder Jewett, having reportedly tied the knot in June 2022.
