The multi talented musical artist was born Melissa Lou Etheridge in Leavenworth, Kansas on May 29, 1961. She is the youngest of two siblings and was raised in Kansas with her sisters. Melissa Etheridge’s parents Elizabeth Etheridge and John Etheridge worked as a computer consultant and an American Constitution teacher respectively. Sadly, her dad passed away in August 1991.

Talking about her education, Melissa attended the Leavenworth High School before enrolling at Berklee College of Music. During her time in high school Etheridge played in local country music groups. She then played in the club circuit around Boston while attending college. But after three semesters in Berklee, Melissa dropped out and focused on starting a professional music career.

When Did Melissa Etheridge Start Her Professional Music Journey?

As stated above, Etheridge had already been performing while she was in high school and college. Having started her guitar lessons at the age of eight, Melissa left college and moved to Los Angeles to start a career in music.

She was then discovered at a bar in Pasadena, California by a woman named Karla Leopold. Karla’s husband Bill Leopold was a manager in the music business and came to watch Melissa perform and was impressed.

Through this connection, the Kansas native managed to sign a publishing deal with Island Records to write songs for movies. Her first record was the self-titled record Melissa Etheridge in 1988. This was followed by Brave and Crazy in 1989 which peaked at No 22 in Billboards charts. After the release, Etheridge went on road with Bruce Springsteen, one of her musical influences, helping her build a loyal fan base.

During their time together, Julie gave birth to the couple’s two children, Beckett Cypher and Bailey Jean Cypher. Etheridge then dated Tammy Lynn Michaels and welcomed fraternal twins Miller Steven Etheridge and Johnnie Rose Etheridge with her.

Sadly, Melissa Etheridge’s son, Beckett Cypher passed away at the age of 21. The singer announced the sad news on Twitter and stated that Beckett died of causes related to opioid addiction.
