The Never Have I Ever star was born in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada on December 29, 2001. She grew up there alongside her older brother Vishwaa Ramakrishnan. Vishwaa Ramakrishnan’s parents, Kiruthiha Kulendiren and Ram Selvarajah immigrated from Sri Lanka to Canada as refugees due to the civil war.

It was reported that Maitreyi was cast as Devi Ramakrishnan in July 2019 after responding to an open casting call. She was reportedly chosen among over 15,000 responses.
Maitreyi was only 17 when she was casted and had not acted professionally. The filming started soon after and in April 2020, Never Have I Ever premiered on Netflix. Along with the show itself, Ramakrishnan gained critical acclaim all around the world. The series was watched over 40 million households till July 2020 and as the lead actress, Maitreyi herself became a world-renowned name.
Never Have I Ever has already released two more seasons and the fourth and final season reportedly wrapped filming in August 2022. Maitreyi has continued to lead the show and has also branched out to appear in other projects.
