The singer-songwriter was born Anthony Cornelius Hamilton in Charlotte, North Carolina, US on January 28, 1971. He seems to have spent much of his early life in Charlotte alone but further information about his childhood is not available. In a similar vein, it is unclear which primary school did Anthony attend. But we do know that he was a student at South Mecklenburg High School. There he sang in the award-winning choir under Mark Setzer’s direction. He started to sing in his church’s choir at the age of 17.
When Did Anthony Hamilton Start His Career?
Aforementioned, Anthony started singing in his church choir when he was 17 and also sang in his school’s choir. Then in 1992, Hamilton met Mark Sparks who encouraged him to leave his hometown to move to New York City. In NY, he signed with Uptown Records, led by Andre Harrell. Anthony then began his music journey professionally and went on to become a well-known name in the field.
After joining Uptown Records, Anthony Hamilton seems to have first served as a songwriter and backup singer. He co-wrote U Know What’s Up, a 1999 hit, for the American singer Donell Jones and went on an international tour to promote D’Angelo’s album Voodoo.
As for his solo career, Hamilton released his first studio album XTC in 1996. Sadly, the record failed to chart on both Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and the Billboard 200 charts. However, this did not deter Anthony as he worked hard on his second album. He put out Comin’ from Where I’m From in 2003 which featured tracks such as Charlene and the title track Comin’ from Where I’m From.
Unlike his debut album, Anthony’s second album, Comin’ from Where I’m From debuted at the US Billboard 200 at no. 33 and peaked at no. 6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The record was certified platinum by RIAA in December 2004 and a year later it was reported that over 1.2 million copies had been sold in the US alone. The success of this record helped establish Hamilton in the music world.
Following the success of Comin’ from Where I’m From, the Charlotte native put out another studio album titled, Ain’t Nobody Worryin’, and the compilation album, Soulife in the year 2005. Ain’t Nobody Worryin’ is certified gold. Anthony’s second compilation album, Southern Comfort was released in April 2007 and this was followed by his 4th studio album, The Point of It All in December 2008 which is also certified gold by RIAA.
Continuing with his music career, Anthony Hamilton has put out four more albums: Back to Love, Home for the Holidays, What I’m Fellin’ and Love Is The New Black. Throughout these years he also collaborated with many well-known artists such as Nappy Roots, Mark Ronson, Angie Stone, Jill Scott, and Gorillaz to name a few.
Besides success on the charts, the talented musician’s work has also received critical acclaim. He has been nominated for 17 Grammy Awards and won the Best Traditional R&B Performance in 2009 for the song You’ve Got The Love I Need with Al Green. He also received the BET J Cool Like Dat Award at the 2006 BET Awards.
