Where Did Anne-Marie Grow Up?
The talented singer was born Anne-Marie Rose Nicholson in East Tilbury, Essex, England on April 7, 1991. She grew up alongside her sister, Samantha Nicholson, and was interested in performing from an early age. However, neither of Anne-Marie’s parents is involved in the entertainment business, rather her father is a handyman and builder while her mother is a teacher in Essex.
As a young girl, Anne-Marie appeared in two West End productions, Les Misérables and Whistle Down the Wind. In the latter production, she reportedly starred alongside another English singer, Jessie J.
Moreover, she started taking karate lessons at the age of nine and has a black belt in Shotokan karate. Anne-Marie won numerous titles in the 2000s including Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association World Championships and the United Kingdom Traditional Karate Federation National Championships. Despite not being able to practice in the current day, the singer has stated that karate has taught her discipline and focus.

As aforementioned, Anne-Marie was interested in performance arts from an early age and was involved in West End productions early on. As for her music, the Essex native cut a solo demo, called Summer Girl, for the Rocket Record Company in 2013. She spent her early career developing her artistry and guested on songs by many other artists such as Gorgon City, Magnetic Man, and more.
During this time, Anne-Marie was noticed by Rudimental and was asked to replace a vocalist. She accepted the offer and is featured on a few tracks on the album, We the Generation. She also performed on stage with the band, touring alongside them for two years. Then in 2015, she released her debut EP titled Karate. Two singles were put out to support the EP.
In November of the same year, she released another single, Do It Right. While the song was intended for Anne-Marie’s debut album, it did not make the cut. Rather, the album cycle for Essex’s solo album, Speak Your Mind, started with the release of the single Alarm. This was followed by the release of the Clean Bandit song, Rockabye, with Anne-Marie as the main vocalist. The song was a huge success both nationally and internationally.
Following this, the Essex native put out several singles and collaborations with her debut album released in April 2018. She continued to collaborate with other artists such as James Arthur, Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, Lauv, Nial Horan, and more. She even worked on her documentary titled How To Be Anne-Marie which was released on YouTube Originals.
Anne-Marie’s second studio album, Therapy was released in July 2021 and went on to receive positive responses from critics and fans alike. However, in May 2022, Anne-Marie was pictured with rapper Slowthai, born Tyron Kaymone Frampton, London. The pair were seen at a jazz club where John Legend was performing. However, Slowthai was reportedly ejected from the venue and later filmed verbally sparring with a bouncer. Anne-Marie was seen trying to de-escalate the situation and later leaving the venue.
