Where Did Amanda Anisimova Grow Up?

The up-and-coming tennis star was born in Freehold Township, New Jersey, USA on August 31, 2001. She was born to Russian immigrants, Konstantin and Olga Anisimova, who moved to the States to provide better opportunities for their older child, Maria Egee, who was 10 at the time. The Anisimova family did not speak English when they first came to the US.

Talking about Amanda Anisimova’s sister, Maria might not have known how to speak English properly, but she channeled her energy into tennis from an early age. She trained in New Jersey and the family later moved to Miami so that Egee could further her career. And young Amanda followed in her older sister’s footsteps and started playing the sport. She reportedly would stand outside the court when Maria played, with a baby racket in hand.

Well, Maria did continue playing tennis while attending the University of Pennsylvania, but she did not pursue it professionally. Rather, she now works in the banking and finance industry and is on the 2018 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for the field.

As for Amanda’s parents, Olga and Konstantin separated, but the family kept in contact. Sadly, Anisimova lost her father to a heart attack in August 2020 which derailed not only her life but also her burgeoning tennis career. However, Amanda is now back on the court not only playing for herself but also for her dad, who was her first tennis coach.

When Did Amanda Anisimova’s Tennis Journey Start?

As aforementioned, Amanda Anisimova started playing tennis after looking at her older sister playing the sport. She was taught the fundamentals of tennis by her mother Olga till she was seven. Then, Amanda Anisimova’s father, Konstantin took over as the head coach for the young player. She played in numerous tournaments throughout her junior career, even winning the Abierto Juvenil Mexicano in 2015. She was only 14 while winning the high-level Grade A tournament and also ranked outside the top 300.

Amanda continued her tennis journey reaching the Grade A Copa Gerdau final and also winning the Grade 1 Copa del Cafe title in 2015. As a 15-year-old, Anisimova also secured the Grade 1 Yucatan Cup and the Grade A Copa Gerdau in 2016 and 2017 respectively. She then competed in two ITF junior tournaments both Grand Slams in 2017, winning the US Open. She was also a member of the US tennis team that won the Junior Fed Cup that year. However, she did not play in the final due to illness.

When Did Amanda Anisimova Turned Professional?

Having started her tennis career early on, Amanda like many other athletes had dreams of playing professionally. Her dream came to fruition in mid-2016 as she received a wildcard to play in the US Open qualifying. This was her first professional tournament and at the age of 14 won her first Grand Slam match. But sadly she lost in the second round.

Following this, Amanda competed in a few junior categories before playing in the 2017 ITF Women’s Circuit’s $24K event. She reached her first final on the professional tour there. A few weeks later, Anisimova received another wildcard to compete in the Miami Open. However, she lost to fellow American Taylor Townsend.

Amanda Anisimova’s pro career continued to grow with her winning the USTA French Open Wildcard Challenge. This was because she reached the finals in Indian Harbour Beach’s $80K event and the $60,000 event in Dothan, Alabama. She also cracked the top 300 WTA ranking following these tournaments. She played against Kurumi Nara in the first round at the French Open but lost the match.

The same year, she secured her first career professional title winning the $60K event in FSP Gold River Women’s Challenger in Sacramento and broke into the WTA top 200 rankings.

In early 2018, Amanda played in the Challenger Series events in Newport Beach as well as the Indian Wells Open. She also won a wildcard entry into the Miami Open but had to withdraw due to an injury after the first-round matchup. She then returned to the court playing at Silicon Valley Classic, Cincinnati Open, and Japan Open.

Towards the end of the year, Anisimova earned a place in the top 100 thanks to her amazing performances at the aforementioned events.

The New Jersey native has since participated in many Grand Slam events and other tournaments such as Auckland Open, Copa Colsanitas, Stanford Classic, Mutua Madrid Open, and more. Despite not winning any major tournaments, she has managed to make a name in the tennis world, thanks to her winning matches against Grand Slam winners such as Naomi Osaka, Simona Halep, and more.

Moreover, Amanda Anisimova’s career prize money reportedly amounts to over $3.9 million to date. She signed with sports giant Nike for clothing and shoes and is sponsored by Wilson for her racquets. Also, the American tennis star is also sponsored by other companies such as Therabody and Gatorade. It is evident that she has already found much success in her professional tennis journey.
